Ranging rod
An introduction to recording buildings, A guide to good recording practice, published by Historic Environment Scotland on 5 November 2019, defines a ranging rod as: ‘a surveying instrument, usually marked off in red and white striped sections; it has multiple uses. Frequently they are used for marking the position of survey stations, as well as for ranging the straight lines of sight or rays onto a drawing.’
